Meulensteen warns third-place Man United: ‘It could have been a completely different story!’

first_imgFormer Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has warned the side not to get carried away with their current Premier League position, admitting “it could have been a different story”.The Reds Devils seem to have overcome their early indifferent form to record five straight victories in the top-flight, with a 2-1 victory over Southampton last weekend seeing them rise to third place.Louis van Gaal’s side are now just five points adrift of second-placed rivals Manchester City, and eight off leaders Chelsea. But Meulensteen, who won three Premier League titles as assistant to club legend Sir Alex Ferguson, believes their run of results has masked a series of abject performances from the 20-time champions.“It could have been a completely different story,” the ex-Fulham manager told Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast.“Everybody is talking about five wins in a row, but when you look at all the games in depth the winning margins have been very small.“They should not have won against Arsenal, Stoke could have nicked a point and Southampton could have won their game too.“But as soon as people look at the results the performances are very quickly forgotten.”Despite still looking a shadow of the title-winning side from two seasons ago, United have managed to close the gap on title frontrunners Chelsea and Man City. And, asked if his former side could do the impossible and claim title 21, Meulensteen added: “It all depends whether Chelsea and Manchester City slip up again, like Chelsea did against Newcastle.“There’s still a gap between second and third, but it’s been reduced over the past few weeks, it went from 13 points to 11 and now it’s just five with just over ten games to play.“The head-to-head games will make a massive difference for the rest of the season.”last_img read more
