first_imgThere is major concern about a major Flu outbreak across Donegal after the HSE confirmed the virus is actively circulating in the community.It comes as the HSE confirmed that the number of people already struck down with the flu has exploded compared to the same period this time last year.And health bosses are now urging the public to play its part in reducing the infection. The HSE Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) has today issued guidelines in a bid to control the spread of the flu.People in high-risk groups need to get vaccinated against flu if they have not done so already, said HPSC director, Dr John Cuddihy.Dr Anthony Breslin, Specialist in Public Health Medicine, HSE North West is reporting that there have been a very significant number of flu case in the North West this year.“We have had 154 cases of confirmed flu in the last 3 weeks compared to only 5 cases for the same period in 2018. There is a lot of flu in Northern Ireland and in pockets elsewhere in Ireland. “About 70 of the cases have required hospital care. It is affecting mainly young children and older adults. Pregnant women have also been admitted to hospital with the flu. Over 60% of flu cases have had no flu vaccine.“The vaccine matches the flu virus so I urge those who should get the vaccine to get it to protect themselves.”If you have the flu you can seek advice from your local pharmacy or discuss you illness with your GP.Although most people with the flu can be cared for at home please note that families are advised to watch and monitor young children and the elderly who have flu as these two groups can get very ill very quickly and may require hospital care, added Dr Breslin.The symptoms of influenza usually develop over a matter of a few hours and include a high temperature, sore muscles, dry cough, headache and sore throat. “This is different from the common cold, which tends to come on more gradually and usually includes a runny nose and a normal temperature,” he added.He said the flu vaccine is a safe and effective prevention measure against flu and it is provided free of charge for people in at risk groups, which includes everyone aged 65 years and over, pregnant women, anyone over six months of age with a long term illness requiring regular medical follow-up such as chronic lung disease, chronic heart disease, diabetes, cancer or those with lower immunity due to disease or treatment.The vaccine is also recommended for all healthcare workers to protect themselves and those they care for.Vaccination remains the most effective means of preventing infection by seasonal influenza viruses and can reduce severe disease that can lead to hospitalisation and death. The vaccine takes two weeks to take effect once received. Anyone who gets flu should stay at home, rest, drink plenty of fluids and use over-the-counter remedies like paracetamol to ease symptoms. Anyone in one of the at-risk groups who develops flu symptoms or anyone who is not in an at-risk group, but whose flu symptoms are severe or getting worse, should contact their GP.GPs may wish to prescribe antiviral medication for patients in these categories. If you need to visit your GP or the Emergency Department, please phone first to explain that you might have flu.Covering your cough and sneeze can also help stop the spread of flu.Use a tissue and place it immediately in the bin. Wash your hands or use a hand sanitizer.If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve.Don’t cough or sneeze into your hands. Scientist Preaches Integrity to Fellow Scientists

first_imgPatrick Bateson (U. of Cambridge), concerned over reports of malpractice by scientists, wrote an essay in Science1 Feb. 4 to remind his fellow researchers about “Desirable Scientific Conduct.”  One mustn’t allow his or her affiliations or biases to influence results.  Performing tainted research feeds the postmodern conception that science is a cultural construct, for one thing, and can overlook important leads.  “Treasure your exceptions!” he says, providing a couple of examples of insights overlooked because of bias.  “The data point lying under the researcher’s thumb might be the most interesting result of the whole study.”  He refers to an actual incident where a Nobel Prize winner placed his thumb on a slide to cover a data point that was off the line.    Bateson’s advice comes down to good old-fashioned values: “Desirable modes of scientific conduct require considerable self-awareness as well as a reaffirmation of the old virtues of honesty, scepticism, and integrity.”1Patrick Bateson, “Desirable Scientific Conduct,” Science, Vol 307, Issue 5710, 645, 4 February 2005, [DOI: 10.1126/science.1107915].Bateson quotes someone who thought the results of Gregor Mendel were too good to be true, but for research done with the integrity and care he exercised, maybe it was too good for the typical Darwin Party scientist who trades in myths and stories.  It’s hard to know if Mendel was careless with exceptions or not; one thing is for sure, his laws of genetics have stood the test of time.    Good advice, but can one get “old virtues” out of Darwinism?  Did honesty evolve?  Does integrity correlate with fitness?  We know who followed the values that sprang from Darwinism (see 02/03/2005 entry).  Science gained nothing ethical from the Darwinian revolution and the totalitarian regime that followed.  On the contrary, Darwinism liberated scientists to maintain their philosophy in spite of the evidence.  It allowed them to cover up the data of design with the thumb of imagination.  Most of their data are exceptions (Cambrian explosion, complexity of the cell, inadequacy of natural selection), such that their thumb covers the whole slide.  Even the thumb is an exception.  Scientific integrity would mean abandoning Darwinism; it’s amazing Science would print such a sermon.    The scientific method is essentially codified integrity.  The study of any natural phenomenon presupposes a love of the truth, a desire to avoid bias and carelessness, and a commitment to follow the evidence where it leads.  Honesty, skepticism and integrity are just as necessary for any intellectual endeavor, whether history, theology, research, journalism, leadership, and dealings with oneself and others.  These values derive from the Bible, not The Origin of Species.  Bateson should reference his sources.(Visited 9 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

Ft. Loramie FFA wins its first state banner

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest On April 14th, the Fort Loramie Agriculture, Food and Resources, Structural Engineering, and Business Management for Agriculture and Environment students competed in one of the following contests: Greenhand Quiz, Farm Business Management and Agricultural Technology and Mechanics CDE.  Agriculture, Food and Resources class competed in the Greenhand quiz, in which tests a first year member’s knowledge about the organization’s history and functions. Austin Meyer placed 83rd as an individual out of 1, 692 in the state.Clint Ratermann, Cole Cordonnier, Joe Seger and Ethan Broerman ranked 6th in the state for the Agricultural Mechanicals and Technology contest.Structural Engineering students took a test for Agricultural Technology and Mechanics, testing them on agricultural equipment, metals and calculating acreage. Cole Cordonnier ranked 24th, Clint Ratermann placed 30th, Ethan Broerman was 35th, and Joseph Seger ranked 40th as individuals out of the 314 contestants. Their team ranked 6th in the state; all participants claim the contest will help them in their engineer and mechanic careers, and are planning to come back to compete in the state finals this October.The Business Management for Agriculture and Environment class competed in the Farm Business Management contest. Students were tested on their understanding of economic principles and analytical ability to solve problems associated with farm management. Out of 512 participants, Jordan Meyer placed 24th, David Holthaus placed 32nd, Amanda Seger was 39th and Sara Maurer was 56th. As a team, they ranked 5th in the state. This outstanding achievement has earned the Fort Loramie FFA its first state banner. To achieve these high scores, the team utilized their skills they learned from their agricultural class, taught by FFA advisor, Mr. Matthew Pleiman. During their interview, the team was asked how it felt to be the first Fort Loramie members to win a state banner. All four senior participants agreed it was a lasting experience, but the greatest feeling was knowing they had finally achieved their goal they made as freshman, creating a perfect ending to their final year in the FFA.last_img read more

Revolutionary method for reducing methane emissions in dairy cows

Cows have four compartments to their stomach. The first is called the rumen. It is a giant fermentation vat capable of converting many indigestible fiber sources such as grass and plants to meat and milk. The other compartments include the hardware stomach (reticulum) which traps metal if inadvertently swallowed, the omasum for water absorption and the abomasum, the true stomach similar to ours. Because of this unique characteristic of the ruminant GI tract, these animals are a huge asset to society because of the grass and food byproducts that are readily consumed to be converted into food.Forty-five percent of the U.S. is comprised of grasslands that aren’t usable for food production. Cows and other ruminants grazing these grasslands convert grass and other plants to high quality protein and energy that are nutritious for humans in the form of meat and milk.A by-product of grass fermentation is that cows burp excess fermentation gas. A component of their eructations is methane.Naysayers would have you believe that cows are a bane for the environment because methane from cows allegedly produces climate change. In addition activists claim animal butterfat in milk contributes to poor health in humans. Nothing could be further from the truth about either but those are stories for another day.My purpose isn’t to get into a debate about nutrition but cite known facts. There is clear-cut evidence that children on vegetarian diets benefit from receiving four ounces daily of high quality animal protein as meat. It will significantly increase IQ scores, playground activity, muscle development and size and stature.*A nutritional supplement, 3-nitro-oxypropanol, (3NOP) when added to the feed of high-producing dairy cows will reduce methane emissions up to 60%. Independent research both at Penn State and the University of Estadual Maringa in Brazil confirmed the claims by the patent holder, DSM Nutritional Products. Over the course of a 12-week study conducted at Penn State’s dairy barns, cows that consumed a feed regimen supplemented by this novel methane inhibitor, 3NOP, had a reduction in methane generated and gained 80% more bodyweight than cows in a control group. Feed intake and milk production by cows that were fed the supplement did not decrease production. Cows gained weight in addition to a reduction in greenhouse gases belched during early lactation. Weight gain is a huge bonus as dairy cows often lose 200 to 300 pounds of weight in the first 90 days after calving because of high milk production. This new product will have ramifications for global climate change from the livestock sector.As I sit here and reflect, there could be other applications for 3NOP. Currently it is in the patent process prior to introduction to the dairy industry. If indeed it works well in cows, there could be a tremendous upside market potential. Here are some other opportunities.Passengers be provided a tablet of 3NOP when traveling on airplanes with restrooms.Chili cook-off judges have an occupational hazard so 3NOP might be included as a part of prep for chili tasting.It certainly would take the crude behavior away from junior high boys that seek to outdo each other.3NOP would be a natural supplement for weight lifters.I bet the quarterback on the football team would provide a supply to his center.Get ‘Er Done comedian Larry the Cable guy could make a “windfall” by advertising 3NOP in addition to Prilosec.Aunt Suzy might slip some of this stuff into her gourmet baked bean and onion casserole but she probably should be warned that it could cause the nieces and nephews to gain weight.And lastly a certain pharmacist in our town after playing volleyball several years ago at the church picnic picked up the name Tooter. It would have saved him from embarrassment and the nickname.This 3NOP product could be a ”win(d)-win” situation for climate change! *S. first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest It is a nice morning, but it would be a lot nicer if we had a little bit of rain. We are in dire need here of some rain pretty quick. A week ago Saturday we had seven tenths and that didn’t even fill the cracks. We were back in the field putting on anhydrous the next day. It was amazing how dry it was after almost an inch of rain. It had been close to two weeks since a major rain before that.We were just walking the wheat and it came through flowering very nicely. We don’t have any visible disease pressure yet. Time will tell when the combine gets to roll. I think we’ll be at least a week or so ahead. We’ll probably be rolling here in two weeks, if not a little before that. Hopefully we get some rain on Wednesday or Thursday and the rain may help finish it off. If you can believe it we are at 100% chance of rain on Wednesday.Everything is up and going and looking pretty good. In hindsight that stuff we planted on April 27 struggled and I replanted some of those beans. They are popped out of the ground but they need a rain or they are going to dry up.On May 31 and June 1 I did all of the replanting. That is probably my least favorite job to do on the farm. Out of the 400 acres I planted early, I redid about 200 acres. They are non-GMO beans and they yield well for us, but they are not as strong popping out of the ground.We finished up sidedressing on Friday. Everything went on well and the corn is looking pretty good. There is a stand everywhere but some of that early stuff does not have a picket fence stand.last_img read more
