We’ve got the venue locked up and we couldn’t be more excited to finally bring a fight card home to Fort St. John, the first one ever.”In the main event of the evening Brad Stewart of Fort St. John will be putting the Fivestar Middleweight title against Cody Krahn. Krahn is the seventh ranked middleweight in Canada after a big win in the cage this past weekend.- Advertisement -“Brad Stewart, a local home town guy he’s going to headline the card. He’s ranked sixth in Canada according to Fight Matrix. He’s excited, he’s been fighting all over Canada and he’s excited to come home and fight at home,” Donally states. “He’s going to defend the title against Cody Krahn who just won last Saturday night against Clay Davidson. Cody’s just jumped up to number seven in Canada so we’ve got the number six and seven fighters going at it for the Fivestar Fight League Middleweight title.”Fivestar cards of the past have had championship calibre fights and fighters with UFC experience as well. Donally plans to put on a show that will be the best line up of fights that Fivestar has produced for home town MMA fans.“Anybody that’s been to any of our cards can expect twice the fight card they’ve ever seen. We’re coming home and this is the reason I started this fight promotion was to eventually do a show here and do it big,” he explains. “We’re talking huge names coming in we’ve got Caleb Starnes, Tim Hauge, to ex UFC fighters working their way back to the top.”Advertisement Donally says it’s a great feeling to put on a local show not only on a personal level, but to give a chance to local fighters to perform in front of familiar faces.“It means everything. This fight league was started with big intentions of doing big things in the Peace Region and we’ve done that. We’ve been to Dawson Creek, Prince George, Grande Prairie, Tumbler Ridge, but Fort St. John is where we really wanted to do this card. With commissioning we weren’t able to do it until now. This is why we started this fight league and finally bringing this fight card home to support our local athletes.”Tickets are expected to go on sale in the next couple of weeks for “Homecoming” to be held at the Fort St. John Curling Club.last_img read more

Be alert, be active and make government pass Lokpal Bill: Kiran Bedi to youth

first_imgAttributing the success of the anti-corruption movement to people’s participation, Team Anna member and former IPS officer Kiran Bedi on Saturday implored the young delegates at the Mind Rocks India Today Youth Summit 2011 that their support should continue so that the government is forced to legislate a strong Lokpal Bill during the winter session later this year.”The movement was a success because of you and all credit goes to Anna Hazare,” Bedi told the summit, which was held on Saturday in Delhi. She attributed her association with the movement to RTI activist Arvind Kejriwal, calling it an ‘opportunity.’She called for people to end their indifference towards how government is run, else it would give the people in power a free run to do corrupt dealings. They should be held accountable, she said, calling the government draft of the Lokpall bill ineffective.Bedi said the government proposes to create two CBIs – saying the first CBI will be under the government control, while the other, the new one, would only investigate new cases of corruption. She asserted that a senior minister told her that the government is worried that an independent CBI under Lokpal may reopen old corruption cases like that of Bofors gun deal. The fear of going to jail and usurping of property created by corrupt means will act as an effective deterrent for people like Suresh Kalmadi and A. Raja, she added. On being asked what makes her sure the Jan Lokpal will not become corrupt, Bedi said, “It’s very transparent. It has a search committee and it is very accountable. All its functioning will become website-oriented. It will be a harbinger of change.”advertisementBedi summed up saying that she is still youthful at heart. Her passion, determination and drive to be just and fearless against pressure and adversaries remain intact. That is so because she trained hard as a sportswoman earlier in her life. She told the youth that what they do now in their formative years will have a lasting bearing on the rest of their life. She shared her experiences with the youth on how to deal with life. The former IPS officer, who calls herself a rebel by nature, told the gathering, her passion to stand against the unjust has remained undiminished since her childhood. She attributed this to her devotion to sports. Bedi was an ace tennis player and women tennis’s Asian champion at the age of twenty.Sports gave right focus to immense store of energy in her that helped her lifelong, she said. Bedi feels spiritual, mental and physical are all essential components of education and sports provide best training in the formative years. Saying she never lost her focus in life, Bedi said she joined the Indian Police Service at the age of 22 in 1972, a profession considered taboo for women. She added soon she became a role model for men during training years. She called it ‘destiny’ that she was transferred to Delhi. In 1975, she had a frank talk with the then IG Police (now called Commissioner) Delhi, P.R. Rajgopal, to persuade him to lead the January 26 parade in 1976. “This is one event that announced the arrival of women in the police force,” she says raising fist in the air.She never looked back. In 1982, Bedi issued a ticket to the driver of the then prime minister Indira Gandhi when her car was wrongly parked. “She was in power, so was I,” Bedi said, asserting the point that policing has to be just and equitable. There cannot be two different standards for the rich and the poor. She explained that she was perhaps not made the commissioner of Delhi Police, because she would have not bowed down to the will of politicians. Earlier, she was not given the charge of anti-terror wing of Delhi Police simply because she would have released people held illegally in the name of anti-terror investigations, she said.Motivating the youth, she said, “Had I not been somebody, I would have been nobody. So, I never lost track of my priority. At 16, I knew when to say yes, when to say no… What you did in teenage returns to you at 20-23.”last_img read more

He was 74.Initially elected as Mayor in 2003, following Portmore’s attainment of municipal status, Mr. Lee was in his second term in office, which commenced in 2012, when he passed away.Water, Land, Environment and Climate Change Minister, Hon. Robert Pickersgill, who represented Prime Minister the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller, who is off the island;  and Opposition Leader, Andrew Holness,  headed the list of Parliamentary officials attending the service. Also in attendance were Mayors and other Local Government representatives.Mr. Pickersgill and Mr. Holness read the First and Second Scripture Lessons, respectively.Custos of St. Catherine, Hon. Rev. Sophia Azan, headed parish leaders and residents who also attended the service. Also present were students from several schools across Portmore. Several of the youngsters lined sections of the roadway leading to the Church bearing flags, which they waved in tribute to Mr. Lee.Many persons turned up at the church well over two hours before the funeral service’s  scheduled 11:00 a.m. start, in the hope of getting a final look at the man who was widely referred to as ‘Mr. Portmore’, as a result of  Mr. Lee’s passion for the municipality’s development.Final viewing of his body took place between 10:00 and 10:45 a.m., after the flag-draped casket was brought in by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) bearer party and positioned adjacent to the church’s main entrance.Glowing tributes in song, dance, and speech honouring the life and work of Mr. Lee flowed abundantly. Family man, hero, visionary leader, people person, politically unbiased, and industrious were some of the accolades used to describe him.State Minister for Local Government and Community Development, and Member of Parliament for South east St. Catherine, which incorporates sections of Portmore, Hon. Colin Fagan, led the tributes.Mr. Fagan described Mr. Lee as a ‘no-nonsense’ and ‘strong willed’ person, who devoted his life to Portmore’s welfare.“As Mayor, he was able to lobby for the establishment of a tax office in Portmore, the placement of (a) Jamaica Public Service Company Limited office in Portmore, land for the building of the Portmore bus park in Naggo Head…(and development of) seven community parks within the municipality, among other things,” he outlined. The State Minister noted that at the time of Mr. Lee’s passing, he was lobbying for the construction of a permanent municipal office for the council, and establishment of a hospital.“George Lee was an example to members of both sides of the political divide, as he was always giving of his best (for) the people of Portmore. I am happy that the Portmore Municipal Council named a road (the George Lee Boulevard) in his honour. We have lost a strong leader, and when the history of Portmore is written, his name will be on every page,” Mr. Fagan said.In her tribute, Rev. Azan said Mr. Lee’s passing has left a vacuum both in Portmore and the nation in general that will be hard to fill.“He was a dedicated, committed public servant who will be remembered for his unstinting service to local government and certainly one (example) of good governance for the sustainable development of Portmore. His political career and contribution to nation building has left a legacy that will be long remembered,” Rev. Azan said.Mr. Lee’s sister, Beverly Santouse, who delivered the eulogy, said he was the first of five children for their parents, and held the “most enviable position” as the only boy.She recounted her father’s decision to also name her brother Emmanuel “because he knew that his son…was destined for greatness…prophecy fulfilled.”Mrs. Santouse said Mr. Lee was industrious, with a penchant for punctuality, traits which she pointed out underpinned his professional, vocational and philanthropic pursuits in Jamaica and the United States. She said the late Mayor was a caring family man who loved children and was an active member of the Portmore United Church for over 20 years.“George was a humble man; he was respected by all he met. The simplest person in the community was George’s friend. He met with Governors-General, Prime Ministers, foreign visitors, and he never lost the common touch. And now that his mission has been completed, he is at rest with his Father,” she added.Pastor of the Portmore United Church, Rev. L. Christopher Mason, who delivered the Homily, noted the “air of victory” celebrating the life of Mr. Lee, that was evident in the proceedings, throughout the funeral service.“There (was) no sense of heaviness or spirit of mourning (clouding) the atmosphere today. Rather, it’s the sweet triumph of a life well lived,” he pointed out.Rev. Mason contended that the life of persons like Mr. Lee “cannot be considered in mere nostalgic terms or simply in personal sentimental reflections.”“The reach of truly good men transcends the limits of our mortality and continues to make a difference in the lives of those who succeed them. Today we celebrate a life that was well lived, the life of our brother, George Lee,” he added. The body of Mr. Lee, who is survived by widow, Aneita Lee; daughter, Claudette Lee; three stepsons, Norman, Andrew and Rojah; sisters, nephews, nieces, cousins, grandchildren, great children and other relatives, was interred at Dovecot Memorial Gardens, St. Catherine. Story Highlights Mr. Lee, who held the distinction of being Jamaica’s and the English-speaking Caribbean’s first directly elected Mayor, passed away on September 29, after a brief illness.
