Enjoying the Republicans’ Latest Game Show: Their Fourth Debate in Milwaukee

first_imgView image | gettyimages.comLive from the Milwaukee Theater, it’s the fourth GOP presidential debate!Tuesday night’s prime-time show featured a big cast of characters, even though a few wannabes from the previous episode had been dropped in this ongoing political comedy series (or tragedy, depending on your point of view) due to their low ratings. On hand for the main event in Wisconsin were Donald Trump, Ben Carson, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Jeb Bush—it’s okay, catch your breath—Carly Fiorina, John Kasich and Rand Paul. Each of them was individually “WHOOED!” like a celebrity rock star as they were introduced. They were the top draw at 9 p.m. on the Fox Business Network, which sponsored the program with the Wall Street Journal, both with ties to Rupert Murdoch’s media empire. At 7 p.m. the “happy hour” debate had Chris Christie, Bobby Jindal, Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum. But who except the hardcore conservative would want to put in four hours watching all this in one night? Get a life, people! The debate rules were simple: 90-second answers. If a candidate talked for too long, they were supposed to shut up (but totally didn’t) at the sound of a bing-bing.“It sounds like a game show, but it’s not,” joked moderator Neil Cavuto, Fox Business Network managing editor, who failed as both a comedian and a persuader. Two minutes prior, inspirational music had played to dramatic retellings in what may as well have been a “Previously in Wisconsin” clip. In 1859, we learned that the so-called “black president” Abe Lincoln (a Republican, no less) had campaigned in Milwaukee. In 1912, a few blocks away from this debate venue, Teddy Roosevelt (then a Progressive Party candidate, no longer a Republican) had given a 90-minute speech with a bullet lodged in his chest after he’d just been shot outside his hotel by an unemployed saloon keeper. And, of course, no conservatively biased video is complete without a cameo from their true Lord and Savior, Ronald Regan, who praised the Badger State’s Brew City for all its worth. In short, Neil Cavuto got it wrong. American presidential campaigns have always been a game, whether it’s TR capitalizing on a shooting for sympathy, Reagan sucking up to Milwaukee, or the Fox Business Network using those stories to choke up nostalgic patriots. America loves drama – especially evocative legends of bravery and heroism, even if they all were just an act – and in less than three minutes of this Republican debate, the storyboard was set and the pieces were moving. Two hours of 90-second-plus monologues wooed viewers with conservative wet dreams. Good America vs. Evil: like illegal immigration, Obamacare, and Putin. Bonus claps were earned if someone badmouthed Hilary Clinton or strategically brownnosed America’s military the night before Veterans Day.“I know that the world is a safer place when the United States is the strongest military power in the world,” said Marco Rubio.“We have to make our military bigger, better, stronger than ever before so that nobody messes with us,” echoed Donald Trump.“We have the strongest military on the face of the planet, and everyone knows it,” copied Carly Fiorina. They said a whole lot of nothing and something at the same time, and that something was whatever earned them brownie points. After all, who doesn’t love being praised? The remaining highlights were when the candidates disputed each other, their outraged voices blended together, the commentators attempted (and failed) to control the outburst, and mostly notably, the crowd whooped and booed.Fox Business Network decided who would attend the debate based on four recent polls, which I’m guessing asked, “Which candidates will get us the highest ratings?”The debate averaged 13.5 million viewers, which was 13.5 million viewers too many, as far as I’m concerned, but the most audience this cable network reportedly has ever gotten. But let’s be honest. Following the November 2016 presidential elections in November 2015 indicates a lack of true entertainment in one’s life. Find something else to watch on TV, people. The Democratic debate will be held this Saturday, Nov. 14, in Des Moines, Iowa. But The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 also opens in theaters this weekend. The fifth GOP debate will be Tuesday, Dec. 15, in Las Vegas. You know, where there are casinos. They’re a better bet if you actually want to win something. Estonia relaxes investment laws for pension funds

first_imgEstonia’s Parliament (Riigikogu) has relaxed a number of pension fund investment rules in line with draft proposals brought forward last year that will apply to mandatory second-pillar pension funds. The Investment Funds Amendments Act, initiated by the government, raises the limit of pension fund investment in unquoted securities from 10% to 30% of portfolios, allowing them to invest more in Estonian companies. However, the overall 75% limit for investing in equity-based assets remains. This limit does not include real estate investments, a change to existing law that had already recently been made. The 10% limit on pension fund shareholdings in individual companies has also been abolished, so pension funds can now own up to 100% of any company. The ban on investing in precious metals and related securities has been lifted; pension funds can now invest up to 5% of their portfolios in the asset class. The rules on real estate investing largely remain the same – for instance, real estate is limited to 40% of the assets of a mandatory pension fund and 70% for a voluntary (third-pillar) fund. However, the limit for mandatory pension scheme investment in single properties has been increased from 2% to 5% of the portfolio. The above changes take effect from 17 July.A complete overhaul of pension fund law is also planned, to take effect in 2016, and will include changes to the rules on pension fund structure.Voluntary pension funds will be able to create multiple classes of units, for instance, with different fee structures. At present, all pension fund units can be redeemed at any time, although there is an income tax charge where the unit holder redeems units before reaching the age of 55.The new law will permit asset managers to issue a class of units that cannot be redeemed before a certain age, specified in the pension fund conditions. This change is intended to help incentivise employers to make contributions to their employees’ pension plans. The planned overhaul will also include measures encouraging Estonia’s development as a fund domicile. It will enable different fund frameworks to be established, such as a common fund, a fund founded as a public limited company and a fund founded as a limited partnership. The last of these is designed mainly for private equity and venture capital investments. The new legislation will also protect the rights of retail investors, with compliance monitored by the Financial Supervision Authority. However, the supervision of funds aimed at professional investors will be waived to reduce the administrative burden, placing more of an obligation on investors themselves to monitor the activities of management companies.Silja Saar, executive director at Danske Capital AS and head of the Estonian Fund Managers’ Association, said: “The amendments aim to broaden local pension funds’ opportunities in investing in less liquid and non-listed instruments.  “Fund managers have welcomed this initiative, as it takes into consideration the local market’s specifics and therefore potentially enlarges the list of local investments available for pension funds.“However, rapid and drastic changes in pension fund strategies or daily management shouldn’t be anticipated, as this is also a matter of realistically available instruments that would match with pension fund risk profiles and higher governance expectations.”last_img read more

Messi: I almost quit Barca in 2017

first_imgRelatedPosts Vidal lands in Milan to complete move from Barca to Inter Barca president Bartomeu says he won’t go to war anymore with Messi Messi wins court case against cycling company over logo Lionel Messi has spent 18 long and successful years with his beloved Barcelona, winning everything there is to win in world football. But it emerged last year that his remarkable spell at the Catalan giants could have been cut short in 2017. The 32-year-old admitted that he wanted to quit the club while being embroiled in a tax row with the Spanish government. The Argentinian was originally given a 21 month prison sentence for tax fraud after Messi and his father, Jorge, were found guilty of defrauding Spain of €4.1 million between 2007 and 2009.The sentence was eventually reduced to a €252,000 fine and in a recent interview with RAC1, Messi spoke about wanting to leave Spain because of how he was “mistreated”.“At that time, with the mess of the treasury, I wanted to leave, not for wanting to leave Barca but wanting to leave Spain.” he said.“‘I felt that I was being very mistreated and I didn’t want to stay here. I never had an official offer because because everyone knew my idea to stay here.” As Messi pointed out, the five time Ballon d’Or winner received no offers elsewhere and ended up staying at the Nou Camp, so it is a case of ‘what could have been’ for the forward. He spoke further about the tax fraud case during the interview.“It was very difficult for me and my family because people don’t know much about what’s going on.” he said.“The truth is that it was hard for everything that happened but it is better that my children were small and did not know.”Messi confirmed that he now wants to stay with Barcelona until the end of his career. “Today my idea and that of my family is to end here.” he told RAC1.“Especially first because of how I am in the club, how I feel in the club, then because of the familiar, for how good we are in this city, for my children, for not changing my friendships and I don’t want it broken because I had to live it on my personal level.”Tags: FC BarcelonaLionel Messilast_img read more

Arsenal Targets Win to Banish Runners-up Tradition

first_imgUEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUEArsenal have a gilt-edged opportunity to kick a self-destructive Champions League habit when they host Paris St Germain this evening knowing victory will seal top spot in group A.The north Londoners have fallen in the last-16 in each of the past six seasons and during that period only once did they finish first in their initial group.Their punishment for finishing runners-up on the other five occasions was harsh, twice being drawn against Bayern Munich and twice against Barcelona, losing all four ties, while even when fortune did favour them they succumbed to Monaco. Even if they do beat PSG, who are level on 10 points with the Gunners, on Wednesday the spectre of a horror draw against Bayern or Barcelona would still exist.Neither of those two clubs are guaranteed top spot in their respective sections and could lurk as runners-up but unless Arsene Wenger owns a crystal ball he can only assume that finishing top will be rewarded.Ultimately, luck of the draw will play its part but an Arsenal victory would maintain the positive vibe of their campaign to date and fire out a message to their rivals.Olivier Giroud’s late equaliser against Manchester United on Saturday means Arsenal are unbeaten in 17 matches in all competition since losing to Liverpool on the opening day of the season while PSG are on a nine-game undefeated run.Arsenal have drawn three of their last four Premier League games and should tonight’s match end all square, the battle for top spot will go down to the final round of games when Arsenal travel to Basel and PSG host Ludogorets. While Arsenal’s level has dipped in recent weeks, Wenger believes his side’s resilience will be key against PSG.“Hopefully we can move on with some wins, we have a big game on Wednesday against Paris Saint-Germain and that will be the same intensity,” he said after the United draw.“I am convinced that we will be better on Wednesday.”PSG warmed up with a 2-0 defeat of Nantes at the weekend although suffered an injury scare when Angel Di Maria was withdrawn in the first half because of a hamstring niggle.Coach Unai Emery later said he was confident the Argentine winger will be fit to face Arsenal.Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegramlast_img read more
