LG demos 19 flexible epaper and color epaper displays

first_imgE-readers are most commonly shipped in 5″ or 6″ screen sizes, but LG Display is experimenting on a much bigger scale and has managed to create a 19″ e-paper sheet. Not only that, it’s a flexible sheet.Could this be the start of a display that replaces newspapers while retaining their look and layout? As well as being large the display is also very thin at just 0.601mm thick. Resolution is also impressive at 2,560 x 1,600 and it achieves 163ppi. The contrast ratio is 7:1, it can display 16 levels of grayscale, and has a 140-degree viewing angle.AdChoices广告LG isn’t betting just on grayscale e-paper, though. Alongside rolling out the 19″ display at FPD International 2010, it also has a color e-paper display on show. This one is much smaller at 9.7″ and has a resolution of 800 x 600. The important thing here is the color and it manages 4,096 of them.Read more at Tech-On!Matthew’s OpinionI know we are all increasingly turning to tablets and laptops for catching up on news every day, but I have to wonder how a large, flexible e-paper newspaper would be received. If you could roll it up and put it in a bag would people prefer the classic layout of the newspaper over reading news off a small scrolling screen? I’m sure there’s more than a few that would.Newspaper publishers would appreciate it as it retains the paper layout, but allows a way for them to get subscriptions or microtransactions every day when people want the latest news on their flexible screen. If such a device was priced right it should fly off the shelves as long as it remained flexible. As for the color display, it’s certainly looking as though color e-paper is going to arrive on the market sooner rather than later. Will the next Kindle have a color screen? I wouldn’t bet against it. But Amazon won’t ship until battery life and text quality is on a par with its current Kindle display. When it happens it should allow for more content to appear and be desirable on e-readers e.g. illustrated children’s books, comics and manga, and magazines.last_img read more
