Sam Bell

first_imgThis name should ring a bell with IU graduates!  Sam Bell, long-time Indiana University Track and Cross Country Coach, passed away on June 27 of this year.  Sam was the head coach at IU from 1970 until 1998.  During that time Sam won 22 Big Ten titles for the Hoosiers.Sam not only worked at IU with their track program, but also spent many years working with our National Olympic Track and Field Team.  The best thing you could say about Sam is “He probably forgot more about coaching than many people will ever know.”  Sam was a personal friend of mine and used 2 of my Batesville athletes on his team.  Judy Bogenschutz had a fine career under Bell and Pete Schmidt also ran for Sam.  Judy and Pete were both at IU in the late 70’s-early 80’s.  Judy later coached under Sam while he was still the head coach at IU.Bell’s most recognized athlete was probably Bob Kennedy, an Olympian runner.  Sam was very demanding, but if you did what he said, your results made the hard work very profitable.  Most of the athletes who stayed with Sam  loved their association with him.  Track and field lost a great mind!last_img read more
